I’m sure many of you are consumed with the memorials today for 9/11, the senseless attack that took over 3000 innocent lives and truly began the war on terror in earnest. 10 years ago I was running for my life in downtown NYC as the towers came crashing down. Eleven of my co-workers and some close friends were not as fortunate. Included was our teammate Donald W. Robertson.
I remember speaking with Billy (Editors note: NJ Stars Captain Bill Manicone) late that afternoon to tell him I was OK and mentioning Donny worked on the 104th floor to see if he heard from him. Billy tried to call him but obviously could not and ultimately it seemed apparent Donny did not make it out.
Some of you may not have known him or others for just a year or two but Donny was the kind of teammate you always want to have. Fun and jovial off the ice and a total warrior on the ice who always had your back no matter what. When I think of Donny I think of a guy smiling and laughing all the time and then on the ice always crashing into someone in the corner who was messing with anyone on our team. He had a great family life with his wife and kids and lived in upscale Rumson, a life he made working hard on the bond desk at Cantor Fitzgerald.
As you remember your own friends or families today affected by this tragedy please also say a prayer for Donny and his family. May Donny rest in peace in knowing he is never forgotten and he was cared for by so many.
